AI-driven demand forecasting: what it really improves

Research from McKinsey shows AI-driven forecasting can cut errors by 20 to 50 percent. What that means in practice and how to adopt it without replacing your ERP.

Forecasting is the first decision in the supply chain. Every purchase order, transfer and production plan depends on it, so even small improvements in accuracy travel all the way to the shelf.

What the research says

In its analysis of AI-driven operations forecasting, McKinsey & Company reported that applying AI-driven forecasting to supply chain management can reduce forecasting errors by 20 to 50 percent. That improvement can translate into a reduction in lost sales and product unavailability of up to 65 percent. The same analysis points to lower warehousing costs, by 5 to 10 percent, and lower administration costs, by 25 to 40 percent.

Why classic forecasting falls short

  • A single method is applied to every item, although demand patterns differ widely.
  • History is used as-is, including promotions, one-off orders and periods when the item was out of stock.
  • Forecasts are produced once and rarely reviewed against what actually happened.
  • There is no clear owner or approval, so nobody is accountable for the number.

What good AI-driven forecasting looks like

  1. Many models, one best fit. Test a library of algorithms on each item and select the best performer, instead of forcing one method on everything.
  2. Eligibility checks. Only use a model when the item has enough history and the right pattern for it.
  3. Segment-driven treatment. Plan stable, high-value items differently from erratic, low-volume ones.
  4. Promotions and events included. Adjust for known future events rather than treating them as surprises.
  5. Human review and approval. Surface the exceptions that need attention and let planners approve, with every change traced.

Adopting it without replacing your ERP

You do not need a new ERP to forecast better. OPTIAI connects to the system you already run, including SAP S/4HANA, SAP Business One, Oracle and Odoo, and applies more than 74 forecasting algorithms with eligibility checks and best-fit selection per item, driven by ABC-XYZ segments.
